Name: South Shore Conservatory’s Evenings Under the Stars Concert Series Presents Heavy Metal Horns
    Date: July 14, 2018
    Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT
    Event Description:

South Shore Conservatory’s Evenings Under the Stars (EUS) concert series presents Heavy Metal Horns on Saturday, July 14, 7 pm, in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive in Hingham. This is the second of four EUS Saturday evening open air summer concerts in the series, and the final performance in the 2017/2018 Jazz/Rock/Pop Series, sponsored by Chateau Edmus.

With its killer brass section, Boston-based Heavy Metal Horns fills the house with dead-on funk and soul grooves, and have often played to sold out crowds. They first appeared in 1989 as the horn section on the Del Fuegos RCA release "Smoking in the Fields." A series of shows with the Del Fuegos through 1990, (which included J.Geils Band members Seth Justman on keyboards, and Magic Dick on harmonica) culminated on Boston's Earth Day Celebration that year at the Hatch Shell in front of more than 200,000 people.

Heavy Metal Horns has received awards from the Boston Phoenix/WFNX for Best R&B/Soul/Blues Act, and two Boston Music Awards: Outstanding Club Band and Outstanding Funk Act. The Horns also received a sponsorship from Budweiser's "In Concert" program.

In his Horns review, Boston Globe rock critic Steve Morse said, “They stress a taut, turn-on-a-dime sound that's fast making them Boston's answer to the Bay Area's Tower of Power, though with an even wider multi-cultural scope.”

In addition to SSC instructor John Vanderpool on alto and tenor sax, and vocals, the band is comprised of Henley Douglas on tenor and baritone sax, Garret Savluk on trumpet and vocals, John Ferry on trombone and vocals, Peter Calo and Felix Rentschler on guitar and vocals, Pengbian Sang on bass, Jim Sturdevant on drums, Bobby Hickman on percussion, John Matthews on keys and vocals, and Thaddeus Hogarth on lead vocals.

New and exciting for this summer are Sip! receptions an hour prior to each EUS concert. Hemenway and Barnes, LLP is the sponsor of the Heavy Metal Horns Sip! reception.  Audience members are invited to purchase a Sip! backstage pass, giving them access to a special live performance in SSC’s Cox Hall, while enjoying a refreshing drink sponsored by Barrel House Z. Creative light bites and on-site parking are included with each reception ticket purchase.

Interspersed throughout all Summer Spotlight event are food trucks which can include Sadie Mae’s Cupcake Cafe, Rolling Roost Food Truck, and Mom on the Go Food Truck, offering a variety of foods such as indulgent cupcakes, designer grilled cheese, barbecue pulled pork, steak burritos, strawberry avocado salad, couscous salad with cherries, and avocado toast.

Evenings Under the Stars is one of two series in the Conservatory’s diverse Summer Spotlight outdoor summer entertainment.  Summer Spotlight also includes fun Wacky Wednesdays family concerts which started its season on July 11 with Karen K & the Jitterbugs. All concerts take place in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive in Hingham.

The media sponsor for the entire Evenings Under the Stars series is South Shore Living.
